One of the main fields of activity of the institute is research and consultancy work in energy efficiency in buildings. The building sector has a great impact on energy use in Lithuania. From 1993 to 2002 about 40 % final energy is used in the building sector.

The main objective of the Lithuanian Energy Institute is to encourage and support the implementation of new and efficient energy technologies in buildings.

The main activities include:

• Assessment of the market needs for new energy technologies in buildings;
• Energy audits in buildings; collection and analysis of the results on energy efficiency;
• Overcoming the barriers and assistance in the implementation of new technologies;
• Assistance to local and foreign organisations in the promotion of new energy technologies in buildings;
• Arranging training courses on the issues of energy consumption in buildings.
