The
Department of Environmental Studies and Heat & Mass Transfer in Buildings
is involved in the following activities:
Undergraduate and postgraduate education of students of architecture
and mechanical engineering in the field of building physics, building
services and renewable energy sources and sustainable development.
Research and development focused on the development of energy efficient
building envelope elements, such as pre-fabricated large- panel solar
collectors, wall-integrated heat recovery ventilation systems, and roof-integrated
solar-assisted low temperature heating and ventilation systems incorporating
short-term latent heat storage.
Research activities include collaboration with industry partners. The
Department has indoor and outdoor test fields for heating and solar systems
components testing and equipment for in-situ testing of thermal and lighting
comfort and IAQ.
Technical support and consultancy for building designers in the field
of lighting and shading studies, numerical analyses of heat and mass transfer
in buildings and construction elements, implementation of innovative HVAC
technologies. Technical support also includes custom-made software packages
for energy and ecology labelling, building physics and solar system planning.
Publishing also represents an important part of the Departments work.
Several books, promotional leaflets, multimedia tools and distant learning
modules have been published for students and specialists.
